When there is too much cholesterol, especially LDL cholesterol, in your blood, it builds up in the walls of your arteries and forms plaque.
Over time, this buildup causes atherosclerosis. The arteries become narrowed and blood flow can be slowed down or, ultimately, blocked. This can lead to heart attack or stroke, as well as other health problems. When your blood cholesterol rises, so does your risk of having these problems.
