What Do Your Cholesterol Numbers Mean?
Your lipoprotein profile is a blood test that measures your cholesterol. This test is done after a 9- to 12-hour fast and measures:

  • Total cholesterol in your bloodstream
  • LDL, or bad, cholesterol levels
(The main source of cholesterol buildup and blockage in the arteries)
  • HDL, or good, cholesterol levels
(Believed to help prevent heart disease)
  • Triglycerides (TG)
(Another form of fat in your blood that can raise the risk of heart disease)1

The categories shown in the following tables were established after extensive research by experts with the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP). Your doctor will consider your cholesterol levels, among other things, when developing an appropriate plan to manage your cholesterol.
